A watch movement, a rack-wheel and a cigar box – just out of these components a twelve year old boy constructed a toy car. It was the first piece of a genious engineer before he wrote automotive history. Meanwhile, Carl Friedrich Wilhelm Borgward has become a legend.
Owner and manufacturer of the watch brand BORGWARD is Jürgen Betz. He transfers his passion and fascination of the Borgward era into his masterpieces of microbrand watchmaking. In 2003 Jürgen Betz had the initial ignition when he found the original BORGWARD steel printing clichés from the 50s.
Since 2010, high-quality mechanical watches of the BORGWARD brand have been manufactured at the manufactory in sunny Markgräflerland just outside Basel. The manufactory produces the watches to order. Therefore, special wishes and individualizations are possible, such as personal initials on the flywheel, which are exclusively available free of charge on Chronofactum. Delivery times for custom-made watches are usually 5 – 6 weeks after receipt of order.
To better understand the watches created by the BORGWARD Time Manufacture, it is worth taking a closer look at the design of the models. As the hand-drawn sketches show, the watches are created from a creative flow and not from rigid, static ideas of drawer or even clichéd thinking. Significantly, in this phase the designer works by hand and not with a computer mouse.
One could also say that design arises from perception and not as a projection of abstract forms of understanding. The resulting watches experience the same creative act as the Borgward automobiles did in those days. They reflect the time of the fifties. “The round instruments of the cars, the typical design of the fifties and sixties: all this is reflected in the watches of BORGWARD”. Jürgen Betz pays special attention to the dials: “The dial is the character, the face of a watch and decides within milliseconds whether I like a piece or not. For me, the dial is a canvas on which I can be artistically active”. With the help of decades of experience and a keen sense of detail, Betz dedicates himself personally to each individual limited edition of BORGWARD watches.
