Hanhart is founded
The sun glows red in the evening sky over the little town of Diessenhofen, located on the River Rhine in northeast Switzerland, as the watchmaker Johann A. Hanhart sits down, takes out a pen and paper and drafts an announcement. He “respectfully informs the worthy residents of Diessenhofen and surroundings” that he has purchased a business and its premises at the town’s Hauptstrasse with the intention of opening a watch shop.
Relocation to Germany
Relocation of the manufactory in 1902 to Schwenningen in southern Germany, the stronghold of watchmaking.
Two years after the introduction of the first affordable stopwatch, the product range was extended to precision pocket- and wrist watches of the highest level of watchmaking.
The first pocket watches and wristwatches extended the product range. Willy Hanhart concentrated on manufacturing his own movement blanks. A second manufactory, which continues to manufacture the Hanhart stopwatch collection to this day, was established in Gütenbach in 1934 as part of the planned expansion of the business.
The company headquarters were rebuilt in Schwenningen in 1952. In the same year, Hanhart participated for the first time in the Swiss Watch Fair – now known as Baselworld.
Hanhart watches are increasingly developing into exclusive objects for collectors and connoisseurs of fine precision watches. The “PRIMUS” single-button chronograph appeared in 2003.
Hanhart’s strictly limited S-Series was dedicated to a very special anniversary: 50 years of Saab 105 at the Austrian Air Force. The design of the instrument watches is based on the cockpit clocks of the aircraft Saab 105, bringing a piece of history of the Austrian Air Force to the wrist of the wearer. The S 105 OE and S 105 OE GMT are based on the cockpit clock of the Saab 105 that is used by the Austrian Air Force and the SK 60 GMT is based on the clock of the Swedish model of the Saab 105, which is called SK 60.
The new limited edition — created by Black Falcon, the young motorsports company currently celebrating both national and international success, and the luxury watch manufacturer Hanhart. For racecar drivers, adrenaline junkies, car lovers, or the modern man with a need for speed. The fusion of Black Falcon’s progressive design and technology with Hanhart’s more than 130 years of tradition offer unmistakable sportiness and maximum wearing comfort. The Black Falcon PRIMUS Race Winner is a very special chronograph, dedicated to the Black Falcon team’s many first-place victories in international motorsports.
The family of entrepreneurs experienced an initial and extremely innovative epoch here in the 1920s when the youngest Hanhart son, Wilhelm Julius, who was born in Schwenningen on 31 October 1902, joined the business and established the watch manufactory.
1938 marked the start of a new epoch in the history of the company – when the first Hanhart chronograph model entered series production. This was the single-button “Calibre 40”, which would soon become established as the company’s main product and its new re-issue as the “Primus” model has become a coveted collectors’ piece and connoisseur’s item.
In 1939, Hanhart was able to increase its sales. At this time they had already employed 200 employees.
The legendary “Calibre 41” and “TachyTele” pilot’s chronographs followed in 1939 – with a red painted button to prevent unintentional resetting.
Hanhart now moved up a gear and commissioned an additional production facility in Neukirch in 1963. There is hardly a school or sports club in Germany in which Hanhart stopwatches are not used for time recording.
The Gütenbach manufacturer responded to this offensive from the Far East by developing a low-priced movement of its own, the Calibre 3305, in 1981. This went into production in 1982. No fewer than 40 million units were sold!In 1983, Willy Hanhart’s son-in-law, Klaus Eble, who had joined the company in 1966, took over the management of the business.
Hanhart celebrates its 130th anniversary in 2012. The Swiss-German watch brand, which still enjoys a reputation as a leading manufacturer of precision timekeeping instruments today, is looking back on an unbroken tradition of manufacturing and a successful and innovative company history. Hanhart is today focusing more strongly than ever on its core competence: the manufacture of functional instrument watches for use in the air, on the land and on the sea.
As a reminder of the traditionally close connection to motorsport of the 1960s and 1970s, Hanhart launches three new chronographs in the “Pioneer” collection. The “Racemaster GT”, the “Racemaster GTM” and the “Racemaster GTF” with their sporty-technical design are the first watch models whose case is made of the 100 times scratch-resistant housing steel. HDS Pro ® .
The new PIONEER One – the timeless chronograph that has been admired in past decades is now back with a contemporary design and technology. The relaunch of this classic model lifts it onto the next level to exceed the desires and expectations of today’s most critical watch lovers. By adapting originality to the latest standards of watchmaking, Hanhart brings the unique charm of the early 50s back to life.
The reissue of our Hanhart 417 ES marks the return of a legend among wristwatches. More than 60 years ago, its historic model served as the first pilot’s chronograph for the German armed forces. Today it combines the best design of the history with the most modern production techniques of our time. The result: a robust chronograph with an exciting history for everyday life and adventure.
