For the overall design of the watch, Nivada Grenchen has kept very close to the original from the 1950s, complete with patinated “Creme Lattev” hands and indexes. Continuing the “Blast from the Past” look, the Antarctic Diver features an easy-to-read black dial that provides a clear background for the indexes. These all have the same shape and position as the original, including the distinctive lettering. The bi-directional rotating bezel now features a black ceramic insert that gives it a deeper and stronger contrast and increases durability. The date window with magnifying glass is located at 3 o’clock. As with the original, the dial features a subtle red crosshair. At the time, buyers could choose between several versions (red or white crosshairs; the numbers 1-12 on the bezel). The reissue honors the iconic version with the red crosshair and minimalist, non-numbered bezel. The homage would not be complete without the legendary Nivada Automatic logo at 12 o’clock and “Antarctic-Diver” in the distinctive vintage lettering at 6 o’clock, perfectly reproducing the aesthetics of the original. The caseback is engraved with the signature emblem of the Antarctic collection: the profile of a penguin – an allegory of the great cold and an allusion to the name of the collection.

REVIVING THE GLORY OF NIVADA GRENCHEN

Nivada Grenchen timepieces have been in the watchmaking industry since 1926, the year when Jacob Schneider first created it in Granges (Grenchen). In 1976, his son Max took over the business. In the United States of America (USA), the Croton Company distributed all Nivada Grenchen watches. The timepieces can have either the Nivada Grenchen or Croton signature, or both.

In 1930, Nivada Grenchen was one of the first companies to manufacture automatic watches. This led to the creation of Nivada Grenchen’s first waterproof automatic watch called the Antarctic in 1950. The watch was worn by the members of the American Navy’s Deep Freeze 1 during their expedition to the South Pole from 1955 to 1956.
Since then, Nivada Grenchen has become known for its Antarctic’s robust and reliable performance in extreme conditions.

In 1961, the company launched the Chronomaster – a waterproof chronograph up to 200 meters. It had three distinct collections, namely: Chronomaster, Aviator, and Sea Diver.

The Nivada Grenchen Chronomaster was such a success that its production lasted until the end of 1970.

In 1964, Nivada Grenchen released another breakthrough timepiece – this time, a diver’s watch called Depthomatic. It was the first diver watch with a depth indicator or bathymeter. A year later, another diving timepiece was introduced under the Depthmaster model – a dive watch that could withstand a pressure of 100 ATM or 1000 meters.

In 2018, the Nivada Grenchen brand was rebirthed with its two iconic models at the forefront—the Chronomaster Aviator Sea Diver and the Antarctic.
